Blinn College vocal students hoping to win a spot in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition will perform at a recital Friday, Oct. 4.
The recital begins at 3 p.m. at Finke Recital Hall in in the C.F. Schmidt Building, located at 800 College Avenue (map) on the Blinn-Brenham Campus. The event is free and open to the public and will be streamed on the Music Department YouTube Channel.
NATS student auditions begin with a preliminary round in which students sing for a panel of adjudicators or a small audience. Judge for the Oct. 4 recital will be Dr. Diane Burt, who also will perform at Blinn on Oct. 7.
Dr. Daniel Johnson, Blinn College District Music Department Voice and Opera Professor, said six students will be selected to represent Blinn at the NATS regional competition.
“This is a ‘pre-competition.’ The actual conference and competition will take place in November,” Johnson said. “I am only allowed to take a maximum of six students, so this competition will decide which six students will represent Blinn at the competition in November.
“It will be open to the public, though, because I want to help them feel the nerves of performing in front of a crowd in the hopes that they will feel better prepared when they reach the big competition in November.”
Blinn’s Music Department offers small classes, one-on-one attention, practical learning, and accessible faculty so that students are actively engaged in a superior learning environment. Students can pursue an Associate of Arts Degree in Music that provides a solid foundation in the creative and technical aspects of music, including music theory, history, composition, and performance.
