Blinn freshman livestock judging team tops Dixie National contest

Sophomore team places third overall

Blinn College’s freshman team defended its championship at the highly competitive Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo held Saturday in Jackson, Miss.

Blinn totaled 4,533 points to place first overall, edging second-place Lake Land College from Illinois (4,526 points).

Blinn’s sophomore team placed third in the team standings with 4,532 points. The division was won by Lake Land College with 4,572 points. Blinn was second at last year’s Dixie National contest.

“This is the only freshman contest of the spring semester, so we were glad the group ended on a high note as they finish out their freshman season,” said livestock judging coach Adrian Austin. “Dixie is also great preparation for the upcoming Texas contests our sophomores will attend.”

Blinn’s freshman team was first in the Brahman, continental, and market divisions. It placed second in reasons and fifth in the British division.

Lane Higbie of Blinn was high individual in the freshman competition, placing fourth in the Brahman division, fifth in the British division, and sixth in the market division.

Lane Hogan was third high individual. Hogan was fourth in reasons, eighth in the Brahman division, sixth in the British division, seventh in the continental division, and ninth in the market division.

Other Blinn freshmen placing in the top 10 were Owen Seidenberger, ninth high individual, fifth in reasons, and seventh in the market division; Mason Wurzbach, 11 ^th high individual and sixth in the continental division; Benjamen Isaacks, second in the Brahman division; Shelby Cones, ninth in the continental division; and Cayl Doise, 10 ^th in the Brahman division.

Blinn’s sophomore team was second in reas0ns and the Brahman and market divisions.

Individually, Tanna Thiel was fifth high individual and was third in the British division. Blane Warnken was ninth high individual, was high individual in the Brahman division and placed second in reasons and third in the market division.

Also placing for Blinn were Cassie Jo Bennett, fifth high individual in reasons and fifth in the market division; Kinsey Gardner, eighth in the British division and ninth in the market division; Samuel Belt, sixth in the Brahman division; and Devyn Gaff, seventh in the Brahman division.

Blinn remains in second place in LivestockJudging.com’s Collegiate Power Rankings, with 1,489 points for the 2023-24 season. Redlands Community College is No. 1 with 1,520 points.

Livestock judging is part of Blinn’s Agricultural Sciences Program, which has one of the most active extracurricular programs in Texas, including the Agriculture Club, wildlife, agriculture mechanics, and horticulture.

Blinn offers agriculture classes on all its campuses, with the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex on the Brenham Campus serving as the program’s headquarters.
