Blinn-Brenham Theatre Arts earns superior rating for 'Golden Boy'
Blinn hosts annual Texas Community College Speech and Theatre Association Play Festival

The Blinn College-Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Program received a superior rating for its production of “Golden Boy” at the Texas Community College Speech and Theatre Association Play Festival.
The festival, hosted Feb. 23-25 at Blinn’s Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center, included community colleges theatre arts programs from around the state.
Blinn students also earned more than 20 individual awards for their work on and off the stage, including Josiah Fernandez (Mr. Bonaparte) and Mikijah Gaines (Driscoll), who received Outstanding Performance Awards (Professors’ Choice).
Other awards were:
- Technical Excellence Award (Professors’ Choice) – Alexandria Leverette, sound design; Jayden Peavy, dramaturgy; Dustin Randolph, stage management; and Nathaniel Scheffel, lighting design.
- Technical Excellence Award (Respondents’ Choice) – Scheffel, lighting design.
- Technical Superior Award (Professors’ Choice) – Luke Parker, properties design; and Madison McDonald, costume design.
- Technical Superior Award (Respondents’ Choice) – Leverette, sound design; McDonald, costume design; Peavy, dramaturgy; and Randolph, stage management.
- Greg Schneider Technical Excellence Award – McDonald, costume design; and Leverette, sound design.
- Outstanding Performance Award (Audience Choice) – Fernandez.
- Acting Excellence Award (Respondents’ Choice) – Alyssa Hale, Anna; Garrison Rutledge, Siggie; and Steve Torres, Joe Bonaparte.
- Superior Acting Awards (Respondents’ Choice) – Fernandez; and Samantha Nolen, Lorna Moon.
“These awards are an indication of how hard our students worked,” Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Program Director Brad Nies said. “This certainly was a student-driven production and everyone involved in ‘Golden Boy’ did an amazing job.”
The final production of Blinn’s 2021-22 season will be “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” April 28-May 1. Tickets are available at www.blinn.edu/boxoffice. Admission is free for all Blinn employees. Tickets are $10 for Blinn students, children, and senior citizens.
The college also will stage its third annual “10-Minute Play Festival” March 24-27.
