Blinn College student Casey Prowell awarded $1,000 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise scholarship
Prowell recognized for work with Phi Theta Kappa chapter, scholastic achievements, community service
July 28, 2021
As Vice President of Scholarship for the Blinn College-Brenham Campus Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter, Casey Prowell helped to make his fellow students aware of scholarship opportunities. His leadership in PTK’s Beta Alpha Chapter, along with his scholastic achievements and community service, earned him a prestigious scholarship of his own.
A sophomore from Bellville majoring in theatre arts, Prowell was one of 207 students named 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise scholarship recipients. He will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
“Casey is an incredibly talented and hardworking student,” said Dillon Phipps, English Professor and PTK chapter co-advisor. “His ability to balance his course load, duties as a PTK officer, and work with the theatre productions was what really stood out.
“Even with little notice, he was able to complete tasks that normally would take days of work. He provided great advice for scholarship applications, and he clearly took his own advice and won an award on his own. He was always happy to help where he could, embodying the hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa through his scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship.”
Sophia Polk, PTK Co-Advisor and Director of Disability Services and Mental Health Counseling at Blinn-Brenham, said Prowell is “an asset to the PTK-Beta Alpha Chapter by exhibiting high standards and morals, while being able to identify with his fellow peers.”
Prowell said he felt fortunate to attend Blinn.
“I was able to get to really know my professors and sink my teeth into any opportunity to learn,” he said. “I was also able to find ways to get involved, whether that be through the theatre program, PTK, or just chatting with my professors.”
PTK is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievements of students at two-year colleges. Founded in 1918, PTK promotes scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. To be accepted, a student must have at least a 3.6 grade-point average with at least 12 transferrable hours.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation received more than 900 applications for scholarships this year.
“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the foundation. “We are proud to partner with PTK to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”
